Strategic Vision


 

Foothill Knolls STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Academy of Innovation is a dedicated community that inspires and empowers all students to be future ready problem solvers who positively impact an ever-changing global society.


What are the strengths and accomplishments of the UUSD Foothill Knolls STEM Academy of Innovation since the January 2017 strategic planning retreat?

  • There’s a Project Lead the Way elective pathway at middle school
  • Our PTA is a force in everything—they help us create new things
  • Restructuring of Open House
  • We sent our first Student Competition Team to Rube Goldberg last year
  • Teamwork is implemented in learning
  • Had some new author visits
  • Our website is a strength
  • Implemented Watchdog Dads—increased male volunteers on campus
  • Saturday School teachers—very STEM-focused
  • March Madness with the 5th graders
  • Had more kids make Presidential Fitness—almost all in the upper grades
  • Tech Buddies Program—the 6th, 7th and 8th graders fix minor technology problems
  • Teachers are very conscientious about making sure they are the best for their students—constantly growing
  • Had a tour of the Technology Section of Cal Poly Pomona
  • Girls are just involved in STEM as boys in our school—no gender division
  • High School Health Pathway students taught our 7th graders a five unit class on health
  • Continuing to develop Spotlight classrooms, so other teachers at the school and in the District can see what we’re doing
  • Our middle school students engaged in an all-school PBL last year
  • Beth, Maria and Josiah adopted a question formulation technique to get student voice for PBLs
  • Progress monitoring in place to monitor kids’ reading progress throughout the year
  • Have choral music options for kids all the way up through middle school
  • The Core Curriculum for English Language Arts and Math were adopted this year and is district-aligned
  • We have a Liaison between the PTA and middle school
  • Continue to have a business partner who works with middle school students in implementing real world learning
  • We have PE competitions (All Star Games) when students finish a unit
  • We have a good Harvest Festival that is a family event
  • At the PTA meetings, teachers came and presented instructional strategies for parents to use at home
  • We’re working toward a partnership with the University of LaVerne for teacher internships and a collaboration between their staff and our staff for sharing of instructional practices
  • The community that sets up the school dances
  • Implemented AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) in grades 3-5
  • Incoming 7th graders are coming from other elementary schools in the district—we are drawing them to our school
  • There are STEM field trips for every grade level for real world learning
  • Planted and harvested our first organic community garden, including participation by parents
  • Students helped plan events and make the yearbook
  • Students like the many clubs at school, including robotics and a book club
  • Our new Elementary Administrator has brought enthusiastic programs and activities to our school
  • Middle school students have access to their grades online
  • New teacher induction day
  • Fully implemented our new hiring
  • Organized meetings
  • Foothill Knolls community sent 28 students to Washington DC
  • There were a couple of PBLs across grade levels
  • The middle school students were used as experts to the elementary school students
  • Astronomy Night was held
  • We fully implemented our STEM Advisory Board last year and held four meetings
  • 8th grade tour of the high school included career pathways
  • We have impacted enrollment positively in Health Academy, Engineering & Architecture and Digital Media Arts at the high school
  • We have a really strong POP (Puzzlement of Practice) Team of teachers who are willing to lead collaborative teams throughout the district
  • We are implementing electives on Wednesday afternoons to increase collaboration between our middle school students—the students have choices on which classes they want to take
  • We opened up Gmail access to all students with parent approval
  • Our site uses GroupMe for instant communication—helps build community and also is used for emergencies


 

  • Students will be engaged in a challenging and meaningful project-based learning/STEM curriculum articulated across all grade levels
  • By the end of third grade, all students will have foundational reading and math skills
  • Increase community awareness and investment in Foothill Knolls STEM Academy of Innovation
  • All teachers are skillful and confident in their ability to support their students' learning and aspirations
